The Time Warp in Television Technology

The high definition televisions we watch today have little in common with original televisions. Those bulky, boxy, and more importantly, black and white televisions were the very basic version of the television. Time, industry and technology have created the latest in television technology, giving viewers access to never before seen clarity in picture and sound.

Still, all televisions rely on the same basic components. The design and function of these pieces may have changed over the past several decades, but all televisions still utilize these pieces. These include an image source, a sound source, a transmitter, a receiver, a display device and an audio amplifier or loudspeaker. These components are used to take the audio and visual signals and transform them into a coherent image and sound.

Many might have once argued that the remote control was the ultimate in television technology. After all, it radically changed the way we view television. That feeling wasn’t to last -today we are faced with yet another radical change in television technology – the increased availability of televisions that support 3-D technology. High definition televisions, those that utilize touch screen technology, Internet televisions, video on-demand and more are just a few of the technologies that are being integrated into the televisions of today.

It wasn’t too long ago that television only came in black and white. Color television was an enormous leap in technology and one that took decades to surpass. Today we have ultra high definition television, surround sound and in-home theater systems that rival the actual theaters of yesterday. Who knows, before long perhaps we won’t need a traditional television at all – maybe we will watch television projected into space.
