Tuning Our Radios to the Internet

Technology is changing the face of radio almost faster than we can keep up with it. Industry leaders point to technologies such as satellite radio, pod casts and the Internet as the leading causes for change in the radio industry. As technology continues to develop, we’re likely to see even more changes.

Stop and think for just a moment about the history of the radio. For literally decades most consumers had access to one form of radio broadcast. While the channel selections may have changed over the years, the basic concept of radio did not changed. It is only in the past two decades that we have seen a radical change in the way we listen to the radio.

The biggest of these changes may very well be the development and growing popularity of a variety of MP3 players. These devices, which are used to store audio media, have another purpose:  MP3 users are utilizing them to download and listen to pod casts. These pod casts can be considered like a downloadable radio broadcast. The subject matter and format may vary depending on the genre, allowing users access to pod casts which cover popular music, current events, the spoken word and other forms of audio entertainment.

Obviously, the Internet has had an equally great impact on the way we listen to audio. Today there are several ways to listen to radio stations directly on your computer. This is giving users access to different types of music, news on global scale and broadens the horizons of users all over the world.

It will be interesting to see just how current technological research will impact the radio industry and the way we listen to music and news.
